The Latest Synergy 12.0 Feature Release Is Here The newest Synergy/DE feature release, version 12.0.1.3275, contains a complete implementation of all new features, changes, and improvements that will soon be released as Synergy/DE 12.1 LTS. This will be the final feature release in the 12.0 series, and we strongly encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to test your applications with the new version prior to the upcoming LTS release. You can read about the new release strategy on the Synergex website. Synergy/DE 12.0 is available for download in the Resource Center now. We’re excited to announce a brand-new online learning experience for new Synergy developers. Adapted from our in-person Language Essentials classes, Synergy DBL Essentials Online is a web-based, asynchronous course that teaches you the basics of the language through a mixture of animated videos, recorded lectures, syntax cheat sheets, knowledge checkpoints, and hands-on exercises. Keep an eye out for more details to come. The Synergex Hackathon Was Out of This WorldBy Liz Wilson, Education Services Program Manager At the end of last year, we completed our second fully remote Synergex Hackathon! Despite not sitting together at huge tables in a large conference room—the standard hackathon setting—this year’s space-themed contest was a hit. Of course, this was mostly due to the awesome teamwork and innovation that the Synergex team brought to the (once again, virtual) table, but there is also something to be said for the strategic use of digital technology in setting a hackathon project apart from the competition. In this article, you’ll get a high-level summary of the goals and structure of our annual hackathon and learn more about the tools that our teams used to take their projects and presentations to the next level. TECH ARTICLE How Your Development Team Can Opt in to DevOps By Nick Tammadge, Software Engineer DevOps is just a fad, right? Wrong. We at Synergex may have only been talking about DevOps for a couple of years, but DevOps—a prescription of practices that increases development and organizational performance—has been a practice in the industry for over a decade, and it isn’t going away anytime soon. As the world becomes increasingly digital, the demand for rapid development of high-quality software products is increasing with it. If an organization refuses to rise to meet that demand, the competition will—and they’re probably already doing it. Starting with some of the basic capabilities a team can control is the best place to initiate an organization’s DevOps transformation. It’s Time to Plan Ahead… Not sure where to take your application next? Need general development help? Now’s the perfect time to plan ahead. Our software consulting services team has you covered. Schedule a consultation via phone or video conference to determine how we can assist. For example, we can do a system assessment, or we can help you review your technology roadmap, introduce you to a new feature, or provide staff to support your application. We’re Distinguished Did you know Synergex has award-winning instructional videos? In December, Liz Wilson, Education Services Program Manager, received an award of Distinguished in the 2021 STC Chicago Technical Communication Competition for her video entry "Connie's Corner: Unit Testing." A Distinguished award means that the entry “was considered by the judges to be an outstanding application of technical communication principles, clearly superior in all areas of assessment. A Distinguished entry is considered something that could be used in a classroom as an example of exemplary technical communication.” But wait, there's more: we recently learned that "Connie's Corner: Unit Testing" also won Best of Show for the competition, besting 33 other entries. Congratulations to our Education department! You can check out the winning video below. Tech Tip Use the Latest DBMS Utilities with Current and Older Synergy VersionsSynergex recommends always using the latest DBMS utilities (isutl, ctutl, fconvert, irecovr, ismvfy, and chklock) on all systems regardless of the SDE version installed. These utilities handle the maintenance and recovery of Synergy DBMS REV 4 and higher ISAM files. You can download the DBMS utilities for your operating system from the Synergy DBMS Utilities page in the Resource Center. Note the minimum version requirements listed on that page. If your system does not meet the minimum OS version requirements listed for the latest DBMS utilities, use the version dropdown to find the most current DBMS utilities that work for your system, and then use those. You should use the DBMS utilities that correspond to the bitness of your operating system, not your Synergy installation, because some features are not supported on 32-bit systems. For example, version 11 onwards, when run on a 32-bit system, uses the 10.3.3g version of isutl. Fun Fact 86% of people try to plug in their USB devices upside down. Industry News & Articles
