TECH ARTICLE Training Others to Continue the Job By James Sahaj, Product Development Manager You’ve worked on your software development job for 20 plus years and now you realize someone else is needed to grow your team and continue the legacy of the software. But how do you integrate this new person into your team in such a way as to pass on your years of knowledge, but keep it interesting and challenging to them so they stay? The goal at the end of it all is to have an efficient, knowledgeable developer who understands the important design concepts used in your software and can think on their own of solutions to problems they encounter. Much of the success of it does depend on the talent and ability of the new hire, but you also play an important role in that person’s success by mentoring, guiding, and encouraging them along the way. By planning from the start, you can make this a reality for your team and your company. Tech Articles Have Moved! We’ve transferred our tech articles over to our blog. TECH ARTICLE MSBuild CLI: A Gateway to Continuous Integration / Delivery By Arief Zein, Senior Software Engineer The usual way to build software products during development is with an integrated development environment (IDE) such as Microsoft Visual Studio. Code changes are made in the IDE, and the IDE has features for building and debugging code. It all happens in the same convenient environment, which is generally ideal during development. For building a shippable product, however, this approach is less than ideal in many cases. In this article, we will focus on building in a CI/CD system. Tech Tip Resolving unexpected Repository issuesOften when unusual errors or behaviors (the issues can be as varied as getting an error adding or deleting a structure or field, adding a description to a field, etc.) start occurring unexpectedly with a repository, they may be resolved by unloading the repository to a schema and loading the schema into a completely new repository (i.e., set of ISAM files). Additionally, the ISAM files that make up the repository may not show any issues when inspected by the isutl utility, and the Repository's Verify and Validate utilities may not show any issue to correct. To unload and reload your repository, use the Generate Repository Schema utility and the Load Repository Schema utility. Alternatively, you can run the rpsutl utility from the command line. Fun Fact Research suggests that the average computer user blinks significantly less than normal while at their screen. It is said that we blink 7 times per minute instead of the usual 20. Hence, your eyes dry out more while working in front of a monitor. Industry News & Articles
