Licensing Synergy/DE products on a system without internet access
If the machine you are installing on does not have an internet connection, you must install and update product keys manually. You will receive product keys in a Synergy key file (.skf) and then install them using the Synergy Configuration Program (Windows only) or by running lmu from the command line. You can obtain product keys online from the Synergex website or by sending Synergex the necessary information by mail, email, or fax.
When you place your order, be sure to tell your Synergex customer service representative that the system will not have internet access.
Obtaining product keys from the Synergex website
We recommend that you use the Licenses area of the Synergex Resource Center to obtain product keys. To do so, your Resource Center log-in must have license admin access. For more information about Resource Center access, contact Synergex Customer Service.
This procedure assumes you have ordered a license and installed Synegy/DE.
1. | Gather the registration information (licensee name and registration string) for the machine in one of the following ways: |
- Display the registration information at a command prompt by running lmu -b.
- (Windows) Display the registration information on screen from the Synergy Configuration Program (SynConfig): On the Licensing tab, click the View Licensed Products button. You can select and copy the text that displays. (You can also view the registration information on the Licensing tab, but it cannot be selected and copied.)
- (Windows) Print the registration information (or save it to a text file) from SynConfig: On the Licensing tab, click the Print Registration Information button. See Other ways to obtain product keys (Windows) for instructions on completing the Registration Information dialog box.
2. | On a machine with internet access, go to the Licenses area of the Synergex Resource Center: |
- Go to the Synergex website, click on the Resource Center link, then click on the Products link, and then click on the Licenses link.
- (Windows) Start SynConfig and click the Obtain Keys Online button on the Licensing tab. This will launch your web browser and display a Synergex Resource Center log-in page.
3. | Log in and click the Manage Licenses button to display a list of your company’s licenses. |
4. | Use search or sort to locate the license on the list. You can change the Show drop-down to New Licenses to limit the list to only those licenses for which keys have not yet been generated. |
5. | When you find the license, click on the license number to select it, and then follow the instructions on screen to enter the registration string and generate keys. |
If you need to change the licensee name, we strongly recommend that you do it now, before generating keys. The licensee name entered on the machine during installation must match the one you see in the Licenses area of the Synergex Resource Center (which is the licensee name given to Synergex when products were ordered). You can easily change either (or both) of them before generating keys. On the website, change the licensee name on the Edit page; to change the name on the machine, see Changing the licensee name. |
6. | When prompted, download the Synergy key file (.skf file) or select to have it sent to you as an email attachment. Save the key file; you’ll use it to install the keys. (See Installing product keys.) |
Other ways to obtain product keys (Windows)
If you can’t use the Licenses area of the Synergex Resource Center to get your product keys, you can mail, email, or fax the necessary information to Synergex; a .skf file will be emailed to you.
This procedure prints your registration information or saves it to a file so that you can send it to Synergex.

Installing product keys
From the command line
1. | (UNIX only) If you have not already done so, set your PATH environment variable on the command line or in the .profile file to include the License Manager directory. For example, |
PATH=/usr/synergyde/lm:$PATH ;export PATH
And then verify that the system date and time are correct and that no Synergy applications are running.
2. | Copy the .skf file to the machine. |
3. | At a command prompt, run lmu with the -f option. Specify the path and filename of the Synergy key file. For example, |
lmu –fMyKeys.skf
The contents of the .skf file replace any keys already installed on the system for the same producer code. See the Polling Messages table for a list of possible errors and lmu utility for more information about lmu command line options.
From the Synergy Configuration Program (Windows)
1. | Copy the .skf file to the machine. |
2. | Start the Synergy Configuration Program. |
3. | On the Licensing tab, click the Execute Key File button. |
4. | Type the path and filename of the .skf file in the Key file field or click the Browse button and select the file. |
5. | Click the Execute button to install the keys. The contents of the .skf file replace any keys already installed on the system for the same producer code. See the Polling Messages table for a list of possible errors. |
